Finnlemm SACCO is a Regulated Non-WDT-Society. We are seeking a trustworthy, meticulous and analytical individual to join the Credit team as the Senior Credit Officer.

Job Summary (Purpose of the job)

Working closely with the Credit Manager, the Senior Credit officer is responsible for maintaining the health of the loan portfolio balancing the institution’s growth goals with sound risk management, ensuring loan products are profitable while maintaining a high level of credit quality and compliance with regulatory standards, monitors closely the distressed loans/debt portfolio and ensures they are fully repaid as stipulated in the terms and conditions to prevent loss to the institution due to non-repayments.

Key Responsibilities 

  1. Credit Monitoring and Recovery
  1. Develop and implement strategies for managing delinquent loans and recovering funds from non-performing loans (NPLs), including working with collections teams
  2. Monitor the distressed loans/debts repayments and initiate/recommend course of action
  3. Instructs and follows up with external service providers on Non-Performing Asset matters i.e. debt collectors, auctioneers etc
  4. Conducts member visits (on a need basis) and make telephone calls to follow up on payments from Non-Performing Assets
  5. Reports on NPAs (Write offs, Collections, Guarantors etc.) on a regular predetermined basis and provide information to Management and Board of Directors through the Credit Manager
  6. Ensures a record is maintained to track recovery progress for all loans/debts in arrears
  7. Ensures weekly arrears and reports are prepared and submitted to the Credit Manager and follows up to ensure full repayment
  8. Ensures demand letters are prepared and forwarded to the defaulting Members

  1. Projecting relevant trends that affect the collectibles of the portfolio and isolate potential problem areas
  2. Track and monitor the performance of the loan portfolio, identifying any early signs of trouble or delinquency
  3. Generate regular reports on credit approvals, loan performance, delinquency rates, and other key credit metrics for senior management
  4. Analyze credit data and trends to make recommendations for improving the credit approval process and managing risk more effectively
  1. Regulatory Compliance & Credit Policy Enforcement
  1. Ensure that all credit-related activities are performed in compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements
  2. Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory authorities, ensuring accuracy and adherence to timelines
  3. Communicate credit policies and updates to loan officers and other credit-related staff, ensuring they are followed correctly
  4. Design and implement credit policies to manage risk, ensure compliance with legal requirements, and maintain profitability
  5. Extracts, confirms and transmits information to licensed Credit Reference Bureau

Delegated Roles

  1. Evaluation of credit risk for potential loans and ensure the institution only approves loans that meet risk standards
  2. Monitor and manage the institution’s overall loan portfolio to minimize default risk and ensure a balanced, healthy portfolio
  3. Lead the process of reviewing and approving loan applications, ensuring they align with credit policies and risk appetite
  4. Set and maintain underwriting standards for different credit products, ensuring that loans are given based on appropriate creditworthiness assessments
  5. Collaborate with other departments to design and modify credit products that meet customer needs while managing risk
  6. Stay informed of market trends, competitor products, and customer needs to recommend and develop competitive credit offerings

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Banking, Credit Management or any other related qualification
  • Professional qualifications in Credit Management (Certified Credit Professional) or CPA(K)
  • Minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience in credit administration or loan management gained in a financial institution, Sacco or Microfinance
  • Proficient in business appraisals and interpretation of financial statements
  • Knowledge of SASRA regulations will be an added advantage
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Suite of Packages. Experience in Navision is an added advantage
  • Strong analytical skills, excellent communication, negotiation skills and interpersonal skills, focused, self-­driven and attentive to detail
  • Ability to advise senior management and member stakeholders on credit management initiatives
  • Strong business acumen and highly dependable
  • Good customer service and interpersonal relations skills
  • Experience in team leadership and supervision
  • Good skills in report writing and data analysis
  • Proven skills in credit risk analysis and mitigation
